Hey - you’re going backwards!
Why go east to head west?
I left home on Saturday, November 2, driving east to Canmore, and will go on to Calgary later today, Sunday, November 3, before flying back west to Vancouver tonight and then on to Taipei with EVA Air, leaving just after midnight and arriving on Tuesday morning, Taipei time. Monday will be lost to the calendar as I skip ahead 16 hours.
Why drive over 400 km east to fly west? Good question. I could have driven to Vancouver. It was a hard choice, but Canmore and Calgary won out in the end. It is a shorter drive, and I can stay with friends and park safely for free. So that beat out the joy of having a single direct flight Vancouver to Taipei. If I miss a connection, I’ll have only myself to blame. But the weather for departure looks great.

I am scheduled to arrive in Taiwan almost a full day before Sue and Rick, giving me time to assemble my bike, and to seek professional assistance if required.
We’ll all stay in Taipei for a couple of nights before heading south on a somewhat hilly route designed to avoid the flat but densely populated west coast. I’m sure we’ll hit Taiwan's famous Cycle Route Number 1 at some point, but we don't plan to be on it for the first week at least.
