Day 16 - Our last full day in Germany

Now in Duisburg

After a rest day in Cologne where the weather was cool and VERY windy we hit the ride this morning with perfect temperatures and calm winds.  We spent most of the day directly beside the Rhine even crossing it once on a ferry.  We did take one detour into Zons a small medieval village that is celebrating 650 years of existence in 2023.  This village was very important during the Middle Ages when the river ran right next to the town.  However, over the years the Rhine changed course moving away from the town so it lost its important stature.  We passed through Düsseldorf before making it to our final destination tonight of Duisburg.  Duisburg was 80% destroyed in WWII because it was a centre for steel manufacturing.  It is again today.  The city also has one of the largest Turkish populations and the largest mosque in Germany.  Finally it is also where the Ruhr river joins the Rhine.

Today’s route and profile.

Steve Miller/GrampiesThat is clearly St.Martin. The guy got around! We think of him mostly as the bishop of Tours.
