From Vitry-le-Francois to Chalons-en-Champagne: Where are the vineyards
The morning is cloudy but soon clears up and we are thankful for a warming sun and blue skies. We leave Vitry on the D44, a big road and a big mistake. There is no shoulder and the trucks thundering by while we pedal uphill are unnerving. After a few long kilometers we can turn off this heavily trafficked road and have a peaceful ride to Chalons-en-Champagne on the small country roads and canal paths we are acustommed to. We are now in the Champagne region, but the vineyards are yet to come.

Chalons is a picturesque town on the canal with half-timbered houses, old churches and some very nice art nouveau. It is only noon but we think it would be a shame to continue without taking a closer look at the town.

We find a very comfortable room in a modest but well-run hotel on the outskirts of town.
Today's ride: 40 km (25 miles)
Total: 831 km (516 miles)
