City scouting ride

Paula and Bill MacMann, the friends we rode with last week in Phoenix, are coming through Tucson Tuesday on their way home to take a little mural tour with us. The timing is great because Mark and Sue Adams, two more biking friends, have just checked in here at the RV park for the week, and they're interested.

Downtown seems like the place to go to see the best mural art in Tucson. I have mapped out a ride and am going to test it out today before leading anyone else around the city.

Sunday is a good time to scout the ride. Traffic is light and I come away with a lot of route changes. At one point I was going the wrong way down a one-way street. We can't have that.  Some places I am riding parallel  to the streetcar tracks which is not real comfortable for a group. Two murals are too much trouble to get to so they get crossed off the list.

I'll save most of the art photos for Tuesday so this is a short post. Here's  one for a teaser, on the wall at the Sahara Apartments...

Joe Pagac and Katherine Joyce finished this mural in late 2020. Pagac described it as “a little African Peyote Oasis.”

Back at the park the Brian Dean Trio is playing under the ramada by the Bocce court. They play regularly at the Hut and Catalina Brewing Company; making a note here for the next time we're looking for live blues music.

These Sunday afternoon music sessions are a great time to get to know some of the people here, like Annette and Dave from Michigan. After hearing of our interest in a bigger camper, they invite us back to see their rig. It has a lot of what we're looking for, notably a pair of comfortable chairs where one can sit and read. Definitely a candidate.

After cleaning up we head downtown to Mi Nidito for dinner with Mark and Sue. We first met them on a Cycle Zydeco ride in Lafayette, Louisiana six years ago. Since then the four of us have met up in Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri and Texas to cycle, paddle or hike. We're thrilled that they have driven out to Arizona for more adventure.

In the course of today I never get it together to get a picture of them. This one is a great memory, from our visit to Big Bend National Park in February 2020, just before the Covid curtain came down.

Mi Nidito is a winner, serving up some of the best Sonoran-style cooking I have  ever had. Barry and I both go for the President's Plate, created in honor of  Bill Clinton's visit here in 1999. The  Birria Taco is a revelation.

Besides Bill Clinton, Graham Nash, David Crosby, Willie Nelson, Cheech Marin, and Julio Iglesias appear on the wall of fame at Mi Nidito
