Near Lake Proserpine

We had read that Proserpine Rock Wallabies can be seen at Camp Kanga, near Lake Proserpine.   So that was our destination for today.

A short and easy ride meant we could take our time breaking camp and getting onto the road.  So we had a proper breakfast of bacon and fried eggs.  We also spent time chatting to our neighbours in the campground,  Hettie and Mark from Brisbane.   But more on that tomorrow.

It turned out that Camp Kanga currently has a number of campers with dogs, none on leashes, so the hope of seeing the Rock Wallabies went out the window.  One camper in a converted bus, who has been camping here "for a long time", seemed untroubled when he told us that they are about but his dog chases them off.  We took a walk through the bush surrounding the campground but all we saw were some attractive Brahman cattle.

To balance the disappointment of not seeing the Rock Wallabies,  we've had some nice birding.  We'll go and have another look for the Rock Wallabies tomorrow before heading off to Airlee Beach.

A number of Pied Currawongs (Strepera graculina) kept us entertained. The Currawongs and Butcherbirds of Australia (which all have lovely fluted calls) are superficiality like crows but are not related, being in an Australasian family with Wood-swallows and Shieldbills.
