I have just terminated my ride through the North of Thailand and had to get my bike back down to Trang where I rent a permanent apartment as my home-away-from-home-and-bicycle storage. The more likely scenario is that you arrive in Bangkok and want to get a train down to the South or go the other way finishing off in Bangkok. Really helpful post, Frank. Pretty much matches our experiences. About all I can add is to try and avoid the non-sleeper 2nd class (the 2nd class sleeper is perfect) and book well in advance.
