Cognative decline

Scott Anderson needs check lists for everything.

I find it difficult to recall names of places.

Do any of you have similar problems?

Me? No! I remember things perfectly. Just like What’shisname with the doo-hickey on show used to say, what are we doing here? Did he even ride a bike? I don’t know. Is  cycling still a thing? Strange,I used to have one here. I better go now…….

Dementia is in my family history.  My dad currently has it and his mother before him had it.  I try to keep my mind and body active to fight against it happening to me, but you never know.  Now, whenever I forget the name of (for example) the band who performed "Low Rider" or the actor who played Sonny in "The Godfather," I start thinking, "oh, boy here it comes."

All three grandparents (one drowned before I was born) and my father. Do I read all the articles on prevention or delay? Of course I do. I think I did. Did I? Who are you and why are you in my forum feed

I've tried to life my adult life in such a manner that my children will not be able to tell if I ever develop dementia. Pretty sure I've been successful, as even relatively strange behavior from me seems normal to them.  So should I ever lose a bit of my sharpness (doubtful, but I'm playing along so the rest of you don't feel bad), it's likely that they would just chalk it up to me being me.

I'm not worried about dementia, as other health issues have occupied my energy the last few years.  The good news is that I'll likely die long before the neuron pathways get distorted and the synapses start misfiring!   Dementia is a strange and frightening thing; Glen Campbell said it best:

Oh golly, this really strikes a chord. As we are getting older we are both finding that our cognitive function is slipping. Dodie has found that her ability to process conversations or written material is slipping. This is especially true in the last few years since her concussion when she flew off her bike. Focus and concentration are sliding away. Steve has never been good at remembering names, but it is getting more pronounced. On the other hand, we often have no recollection of being in a place on a previous tour and can keep going around the same route quite happily. It is new every time. There is always a silver lining!

By golly..if I could remember my password, this reply would be shorter. If a name or place does not come to mind within three days..Google. Ice cream shops always come to mind in towns across the U.S. even when routes or towns fail me.

Steve totally forgot that we had stayed in a certain Hotel one year previously. That is until he looked out the window and recognized the Pizza shop across the street.   Food is a powerful aid to memory.
