Scott a few thoughts which may or may not answer your Beatles inspired question.
Bicycles have been enabling world wide travel for fun and exploration for about 140 years, and people who choose to independently travel, using so much of their own physical energy, also seem to be determined to share their experiences.
The means by which their cycle travel experiences are shared ranges from books, newspapers, magazines, audio, film, radio, TV, websites, blogs, vlogs, social media platforms and public presentations.
The affordability, and comparative simplicity, of bicycle enabled travel makes it accessible to a huge number and diversity of people. Similarly, access to the various means of publishing and journaling is also almost universally accessible.
Considering this combination of desire to share travel experiences, and accessibility to the means of cycle travel and journaling, my guess is that indeed cycle tour journalism will continue unabated.
That said, history tells us that communication technologies ebb and flow, evolve, change, go extinct and new ones appear. So I’d also guess that cycle tour journalism will also change in response to those communication technology changes.
Yup, but I was more thinking of current events. I read the news today, oh boy. What if someone feels that they’re obligated to report that our website shows us as too awake for our own good and our host puts us back to sleep for the duration? Should we have backup or dual hosts In strategic locations? Just askin. I understand there be hostile actors in the world, here and elsewhere.
Scott yesterday our troubles seemed so far away, but now they are coming closer. Even to those of us who mostly cycle-tour in the continental equivalent of a remote, sleepy cul-d’sac far, far from most significant global events.
Nevertheless, I remain optimistic that current systems are robust enough to withstand the nowhere man and his tech oligarchs. I can’t see them taking an interest in a humble cycle touring site.
Looking back over many decades of cycle-touring, we’ve seen quite a few concerning global events. Keep pedalling is my mantra. Treat the headwinds as an opportunity to get fitter.
I bet he who must not be named has back ups and redundancies to cover that eventuality!
Ever the optimist, I think there will be a place to publish and save our cycling exploits for years to come. I better be right, because I haven't uploaded or downloaded any of my last several tours to a flash drive or the cloud or anywhere else. If I lose that stuff, I'll be okay, though. I've lost some of my writings before, and it didn't make me a "real nowhere Man, sitting in a nowhere land, making all his plans for nobody." I'll still look forward to future tours and writing about them in a notebook like I used to do.
Will Cycle tour journalism as we know and practice it continue be made available somewhere in the world?
