Wow! You not only a met a famous person, you met a ROYALLY famous person. Thanks for telling your story.
I've often thought about how cool it would be to meet somebody who recognized me from one of my journals. (I'm such a dreamer.) But you actually had it happen. Congratulations, you're famous!
Greg only if gawking awkwardly from a couple of metres distance counts as ‘meeting’.
A few decades later, while cycling here at home in Canberra on a quiet Sunday morning, my wife and I unwittingly pedalled within a few metres of Prince Charles’ dear mum Queen Elizabeth II.
She and Prince Phillip were going to a church service at the small church, St Johns, in the suburb near us.
When we saw who it was, we parked our bikes and strolled much closer. Again to within a few metres. It was surprising how relaxed the security was and how minimal the media presence was.
QEII (RIP) really was a monarch who loved mingling with the commoners. Even grubby Australian cyclists.
During bike tours I remember meeting three strangers who had read my tour journals. I forgot about some others because I think they were lying. ;-)
Carl Umland, at Red's Meadow hiker/biker campground in California, 2009.
In 2012 he and riding buddy Neil Schneider led me on a day tour of San Diego.
Today I had a guided bicycle tour of San Diego thanks to Internet acquaintance Neil Schneider. Also along for the tour was Neil's friend Carl Umland who I met at the Red's Meadow hiker/biker campground during my 2009 California J bike tour.
Judy Norris, at Crazy Horse monument in South Dakota, 2015.
Just before leaving Crazy Horse a woman named Judy Norris walked up and introduced herself. She asked if my name is Wayne and said she has seen my journals and recognized the yellow recumbent and faded underseat panniers. She's from Edmonton and is not on a bike tour now.
Marilyn Swett, while climbing Douglas Pass in northwest Colorado, 2018.
Early in the afternoon I was passed by a car with a woman hanging out the window yelling "Wayne! Wayne!". It turned out to be Don and Marilyn Swett, fellow touring cyclists. They live in Denver and are traveling to Oregon for a bike tour.
Now I can join the crowd of meeting someone famous - while riding, if not while touring. I was in East Saguaro Park, AZ, and a fellow cyclist called me over, asking questions about my recumbent. That segued into discussing his plans to spend Thanksgiving in Colorado, and that I was from Colorado. I made suggestions about his planned route. We ended up exchanging phone numbers. I was curious enough to google his number, and discovered he is a motivational speaker with his own website and 60 books to his name!
Riding a recumbent brings a certain amount of personal notoriety. I had a driver pull alongside of me yesterday at a stoplight in Tucson. He noted that my bike looked like a blast to ride, and that I had the legs to make it go. That's the second time I've had a man comment on my (generous) leg size. Both times I gave them the benefit that it was a positive comment.
You said "I've often thought about how cool it would be to meet somebody who recognized me from one of my journals."
That happened to me - sort of - he recognized my bike from my Transam journal! Actually, he noticed the Hula Girl on the rear rack and that's what he remembered from my journal originally posted on the crazy site. So I guess to be honest, it was my bike Harvey who was recognized, not me - Harvey is never going to let me forget about it either! Harvey recognized by Tom from Eagle River, Alaska
I already knew you were famous with all your years and miles of touring, so I'm a little surprised there were only three people (plus the suspected liars) who recognized you.
Speaking of Marilyn Swett, I waved to her and her husband, Don, in Idaho as we passed in opposite directions. Since then, we had near misses in Iowa, Upper Michigan, and my home state of Minnesota.
Considering all of your brushes with British Royalty, I had no idea how appropriate it was that I called you Lord Graham in the Crazyguy days. (I can't remember the name of the hilarious bike touring journal writer from Hawaii who started the "Lord Graham" thing.)
Congratulations on joining the "Famous Person Meeting Club." A motivational speaker who has written sixty books is certainly a famous person. I've seen quite a number of motivational speakers, courtesy of the company where I worked for 34 years. I'm a little jaded, so they never really motivated me much, but they always had some entertaining stories to share.
Regarding leg size, I had a compliment on my muscular thighs once. The fact that it came from a guy took some of the luster off of the compliment though.
Once another cycle tourist who accidentally came across my tour notes recognized me. So I was the famous one... :D
