IL 13 between Marion and Carbondale is a pretty busy stretch of road. It's probably safe with the shoulder but it's busy enough that I'd personally avoid it and go for the less-traveled side roads.
My 2017 trip was a motorcycle journey to view the total solar eclipse that occurred that year. I started and ended at my home in Maryland, and viewed the eclipse from a place in the countryside somewhere west of Golconda. The night before, I stumbled on and camped in the city park in Ridgway, which is the only reason I knew about it and was able to mention it to you.
Apart from that brief incursion, I've not been in Carbondale or the rest of southern Illinois since late 1987 (and I didn't get to Carbondale in 2017, for that matter).
Sounds like an awesome journey. Thanks for the heads-up on 13. I thought of that but folks said it wasn't bad. May research further: even if a shoulder, a quality of ride issue.
