A Tribute to a Fallen Cyclist

Ron Suchanek

Jen wrote a tribute to our good friend Gay Rehnback, a prolific bicycle traveler and our bike travel mentor. He died yesterday, September 16 while cycling  near his home in Virginia Beach, VA, just a couple weeks after completing the Northern Tier.

Gay didn't participate in social media, but it's likely many of you ran into him if you've toured in the US.

As our friend Andrea Brown said, we put ourselves on our bikes in the world. It's a place of freedom, power, and vulnerability.

I'm so sorry your friend and fellow cyclist is gone.  I wish I had met Gay.  He sounds like he was a very kind and generous person.  It's very sad when one of the best of the cycling community leaves us.  The tribute you wrote for him in your journal, Undaunted Porridge, is quite beautiful.   Thank you.

That’s a moving and inspiring memorial for your friend. Beautifully written.

No doubt Gay was one of those people who lived life to the fullest and selflessly, and cycle touring was one of the ways he expressed that generosity of spirit.

Thanks Graham. He lived a lot of life in 73 years.
