Route Planning software (page 4)

Thanks John.  I'd not heard of Wahoo until recently, since I've had my Edge for nearly a decade.  My primary routing / navigation tool is my phone + RideWithGPS but I loke having the GPS as a backup for those awkward times when I've left the coverage area on the phone.

I think Wahoo units attach to their mount slightly differently from Garmin, yes?  Can you buy Wahoo inserts for the otherwise-generic "out front" style mounting arms?

And, sorry everyone for the thread hijack...

If I've parsed the thread correctly, you might be able to download and use the OpenStreetMap data rather than buying Garmin's map data.  That is, if you insist on continuing with BaseCamp.

Keith - the Wahoo devices come with two mounts: an out front mount and a bar stem mount.  Wahoo does sell an adapter for putting Wahoo on a Garmin mount, or you can usually find any adapter you can think of on Shapeways!

I would not be too quick to blame the Garmin device - it is more likely the underlying map that is creating the issue. Maps and their data age. Garmin can only read what the data tells it.

I agree with Scott Fenwick—the device can only work with the data it has.  I got my Garmin 810 in 2013 and replaced it with a new 830 last year.  At the time, the 810 was the only device available that offered the navigation features I wanted, chiefly a map view.  It could create routes to find locations, but only those in its database and only of you spelled them the same way. For example, is it Saint Jean or St. Jean or perhaps St-Jean or some other variation?  The fellow who explained this to me said this was a problem with all GPS units.

I now rarely turn on my Garmin’s navigation, preferring instead to just have it display a map with a line showing my route and the little marker showing my location and recorded track.

I lead a ride for my local club into an area that I was not familiar with and used the planning function for the first time. I was delighted to hear a female  voice with an Aussie accent giving the turn by turn instructions!

Chapeau to RideWithGPS!
