I am planning a bike trip in Italy that will visit Lake Como. I'd like to ride from Colico (northeast tip of the lake) to Bellano (south of Colico) along the lake road. After Bellano, I will head into the hills.

Is this safe? I know there is a new autostrada that takes most of the traffic but streetview shows the road as narrow and full of traffic.  I will be doing this ride in late July, so traffic will likely be heavy.

Has anyone done this ride? If it isn't safe, I can take a train or ferry. But, I rather ride.
