This was an awful, senseless incident. Senseless, yes, but at least she was out riding her bike. Better than a slow death from disease, she died a bicycle warrior's death, and a rather unique one at that. I'm not trying to diminish the awfulness of the senseless loss of life due to this incident, just noting that at least she was out doing something worthy when it happened.
I was camping on tour last summer in Montana near the location of this tragic incident; Montana Bear Kills Cyclist . So it would seem that there are many ways to die a bicycle warrior's death besides the usual way involving a careless/reckless driver. Lightning can do it, and there are many examples of it; Lightning Kills Cyclist . Strong winds can do it; Wind Blows Tree Onto Cyclist . I suspect hail could prove fatal as well; Hail Injures Cyclist . Dogs attacked me last year and attempted to kill me; Dog Attack (see introduction section "I Never Saw That Coming").
Be careful out there my friends - it's not just the motorists that endanger us.
How many of us see this and think, could have been me? Another hazard we must contend with while riding.
I read about this accident when it happened, and now we learn that someone not doing her job caused this cyclist's death. I've walked my bike over a couple of drawbridges, and next time will do so with a lot more caution and fear. Prayers for Carol Wright, who suffered the unimaginable in her final minutes.
