Probably the dining room full of bikes, although two of the six were tiny balance bikes that just moved to the birthday girls' home this week.
We have a few bicycle-themed knick knacks here and there. But the real tell is downstairs in the workshop, which is largely given to bikes and bike-related paraphernalia.
Oh, and the assortment of bike-carrying equipment stacked haphazardly in the carport. (And the recumbent trike hanging from the peak rafter in the carport might be another tell...)
The yard service ensures that the weed patch that passes for our front lawn does not grow out of control.
We don’t have a house any more of course, but we quickly establish our brand wherever we happen to be at the moment. If you stopped in at our AirBnB in Portland today you’d know by the use we’ve made of the second bathroom.
Other than my garage,where I store my bikes, you would see no evidence of a bike rider. However, if you obtained a legal warrant to search the pictures on my phone, you would find that 90% of them are photos from my bicycle tours and my daily bike rides.
Wait, I just thought of something else. If you were to visit during the Christmas season, you might see cards like this one:
I know better, from first hand observation. Beer makes it onto your list too.
Although the red paint has faded, you'd detect this secret signal on my front porch:
This is a great thread, thanks for starting it. The "unkempt garden" and the lack of needed maintenance around the house would show someone that my priorities lay elsewhere, but there's really no outward signs to give away my love of cycling. Inside though is a different matter, with lots of clues here and there. Entering through the garage, one might notice the bikes in the corner that I ride somewhat regularly;
Or perhaps one might notice the corner of the garage where the spare parts and such are kept - since it's not very neat I'll spare you the agony of looking at it. Inside the house, one might spot several cycling books in the bookshelves in the living room. Moving down the hallway towards the kitchen, an oil painting pretty much gives it away;
The painting was based on a picture and done by a friend of ours while I was completing my Transam journey in 2015; it's me and the bike with the Virginia Blue Ridge in the background - it was given to me as a very nice surprise to commemorate my 1st long tour.
If you stumbled into my office (it's cluttered enough that you would likely stumble indeed), one wall makes it pretty obvious that a cyclist lives here;
A few items on that wall may be worthy of a closer view. I've been a lifetime member of the LAW (now known as the LAB) since 1977;
The proper name of the organization is the League of American Wheelmen, and I was sorely disappointed when they changed the name to League of American Bicyclists (though I do understand why they did it);
My bike (at that time) appeared on the cover of the LAW journal in 1981;
That's my old Schwinn Super Le Tour (with the blue shower cap on the saddle protecting it from the rainstorm that just passed) at a stop on the annual Oklahoma Freewheel tour in 1980. I was part of the group that started the annual Freewheel ride in 1979 - I was quite surprised to see my bike on the cover when it appeared.
Also in my office, one might notice the collection of LAW journals, Adventure Cycling magazines, and Bicycle Quarterly magazines (amongst others) that live amongst the clutter on top of my bookshelves;
And while there are other hints scattered here and there, this is the last one I will show;
I picked up this little piece of art at the Christmas market in Mainz Germany in 2019. I bought other such trinkets that befit family members, and selfishly decided that I needed a memento for myself.
Other hints abound that I am a cyclist, including various items stored in the shed out back. So while it isn't obvious from the road view, a deeper dive reveals the truth of my love for cycling.
...how could I tell that a cyclist lived there?
An unkempt garden? Wet cycling shoes by the door?
What gives you away as a cyclist?
