Some news from the European Union

Scott Anderson

A couple of recent news items from the EU that might be relevant for folks thinking of touring there.  First, a new security/visa protocol is being implemented (or maybe already has been; I’m not clear myself yet): the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS).  By the end of this year, countries that currently can travel in the Schengen Zone without a visa will have to first obtain an ETIAS Visa.  As I read it, application and receipt of an ETIAS visa looks fast and perfunctory, but it needs more research.  If anyone has first-hand knowledge we’d love to hear about it.  It looks like the system may already be in effect but will not become mandatory until the end of the year.

And, last month Croatia was finally granted admission to the Schengen Zone and plans to join sometime in 2024.  If you’re looking to leverage a visit to Croatia as a way to extend your stay in Europe beyond the 90 day Schengen limit, you’d better hurry.

All of the above applies to UK citizens too, now. I'm beginning to think that all that talk of "cutting red tape" wasn't strictly true...

These things are nearly always reciprocal. If you make it difficult for foreigners to visit your country, chances are they'll make it hard for you.

Most developing world countries allow easy access to citizens from the developed world but this access is seldom reciprocated.
