"...Palm Springs/Imperial Valley/Joshua Tree..."
I second that. Be sure to ride to Borrego Springs.
I third all that. Some very interesting riding, including many dinosaurs.
See, for example:

The desert around Borrego Springs also has horses, elephants and other creatures.
Bill, your 2016 Salton Sea tour journal was a major inspiration for my 2016 Joshua Tree-Anza Borrego-Imperial Valley bike tour.
Kelly - I agree with everyone about Borrego Springs, although you might not get in enough riding riding for more than a week. Scott and Rachel did more hill rides than we did. The valley itself is flat with few roads. But I would concur about St George, UT. Closer to Rifle than Atlanta and lots of different types of riding available from trails to hills to countryside. Many roads have on-street bike lanes. The city is similar to Tucson. I think you could stay there for at least a couple of weeks or more. We plan to go back in the future and spend more time.
Everyone has been persuasive. I've been reading Wayne's journal and the Andersons' journal of their Borrego Springs area tours. We are all ready to give it a go! But, our airbnb for December is now past the refund date. We will have an entire year to fine tune the route.
I noted Andersons' wishes to ride S2 all the way to Ocotillo. Wayne rode it. Fine details like that are fun to chase down and cross reference.
Any other specific recommendations are welcome!
Kelly
Borrego Springs seems to be a favorite. I stayed there during bike tours in early November and late February and think it should still be pleasantly warm most of the time in December.
