You photo of the dormant rail line dredged up a memory. A few years back my wife and I were up on the island with our bikes. On our day from Duncan to Yellow Point we decided to just take the most direct route, up HWY1. Not particularly scenic, but it did the job.Something we noticed was a rail line running below us. We both thought it would make a fine rail to trail conversion. At the end of the day I saw a comment in a local paper advocating for that. So I was wondering, have there been any moves to do a conversion? Assuming you know which rail line I'm talking about.

3 years agoLinda, my wife converted her Bike Friday Tikit, to a Grin front wheel electric assist the way you are planning. She absolutely loves it. I now with my NWT have trouble keeping up to her especially on the hills. The set up does add an appreciable amount of weight but because of the motor she does not notice it. It is a great set up.
Neither of us were geeky enough to do it ourselves so she returned it from Edmonton to Bike Friday for them to do the retrofit.
Certainly looks world class to me.
3 years agoVery interesting! It’s great you’re being the guinea pig for this.
3 years agoWe are delighted to see the Grampies poised with their bikes in the driveway!
3 years agooK at 2? That was the old, tough Andersons you’re talking about.
3 years agoOh, OK then. This does look world class.
3 years agoSitting here eating my "last bagel" before setting off, I see out the window that I already need to find the warm and the wet bags!
3 years agoI think we learned of the packing cubes from you!
3 years agoI've been using ultralight MEC packing cubes and stuff sacks for years. Although I don't use the same bags for the same purpose on every trip, I am consistent during any given trip. When camping, the (dirty, wet) panniers stay in the tent vestibule and only the needed (clean, dry) inner bags come in.
As for what goes in which pannier, I've got a good system for 4 panniers. I have less than 3 weeks to develop a new one for two-pannier hotel-based tours.
I passed by Crust on one of my walks last week (we are spending October in Victoria) and it was lined up out the door. Now I know why.
3 years agoIn iffy weather, the only bag I know for sure is the rain gear bag, and I'm sure to keep it on the top in the left hand pannier for easy access. The rest is kind of haphazard.
3 years agoMike, we discounted mid motor because of the way Bike Friday folds. But yes, mid motor dispenses with your front derailleur, limiting your gearing. But with the motor on your team you generally do not need as much gearing.
Even my cheap front hub motored Chinese trike (an ebike of ours I never talk about!) has a disconnect for the power cable just beside the motor.
I read somewhere that ordinary internal rear hubs can fail under the load from a mid motor. If true, Rohloff would be the way to go. On the other hand Dodie's Reise Mueller came with an 8 speed internal Shimano hub that seemed totally standard for German ebikes, and it has worked flawlessly, except that it is a total bug to deal with when there is a rear puncture.
Yikes! That trail does get pretty rough at the end. Hope Dodie's bike is ok!
