Don't move to Florida. You'll miss those winters.
2 years agoThanks Rocky. Today should be a better test of my toughness. I hope I don't let you down.
2 years agoWell, that's true if I still had my trike (which had fat knobby tires and was perfect for some winter riding). Unfortunately it was stolen in early 2020 - from a locked garage in a locked cargo trailer! The thieves totally left the tandem and my single bent alone which was good. We have better locks on the trailer now, but can't do much about the garage since we live in a condo building and garage area is like 4 carports together, each with their own doors. When you open your door you can see and access your neighbors vehicles. Yup - 2020 was a BAD year!
However, I do have really warm riding gear and will often ride my single if the roads and trails are dry. Denver has pretty mild winters and I can ride all winter - even into the 30's. But Tuesday's forecast here is for 64 degrees!! I'm ridin' (but only if the snow we're getting now melts:)
I'm really sorry that the sun came out and spoiled your ride! Such bad luck!
2 years agoThat was a joke, of course - it is only about 5 km.
2 years agoHi,
Well, by definition everything at 0 degrees (C) is cool, but yeah, those were cool pix. I think you made the right decision to go north. The Cannon valley is closed in the winter, except for cross country skiers, even though there might not be snow on it. The alternative route on the county roads, assuming not much has changed, is pretty, but very shaded because of cliffs and valleys, but I’m sure you know all that.
I rode hwy. 61 in the winter once, from Redwing to YOUR TOWN. It’s not the snow, it’s the salt kicked up by the trucks that stings.
Now my winter riding is much more subdued. Not much snow in Burgundy, although it did snow last night. It’ll probably be gone before I need to go to the bakery.
Have a great trip.
Cheers,
Keith
You are really tough! It’s good to have another of your journals to read.

Marilyn, as I recall, you have a trike. You wouldn't fall over on that would you? Just dress warm, take it slow, and allow yourself plenty of braking time. Denver must have a decent winter cycling culture.
2 years agoWell, Tuesday's high hit while I was riding and it got clear up to 25 here in Dayton, OH. Yesterday, it was in the upper 30s and the prior evening's snow melted off before I got to riding. Today it was in the mid 40s and enough nicer that I saw a few other cyclists on the paths. I can hardly wait till spring with highs in the 60s! Cold hurts, and as much as I dislike it, I can work through it, but as I close in on 76, it seems to hurt worse each year. Florida is sounding better all the time. Not sure I will ride if temps drop below minus 10 this year.
2 years agoRich, just think how much more you'd appreciate that log on the fire after a few hours of freezing temperatures. Try it, you'll like it.
2 years agoBummer. How far is the next town after the next town?
2 years agoBill, I guarantee you I can find something for you to identify. In fact, I already did.
Nice to see you are a comrade in year-round cycling.
Some guys have all the luck. I'm not one of them. Thanks for your sympathy.
