We rode the Willamette in October and it was hot! Drink lots of fluids. Have a wonderful time.
5 years agoThanks for your offer and burger tip Andrea.
Kind and welcoming has been or experience, here, and actually everywhere!
Last night we did enjoy a place called "Bongo's", which has seating on sand and really superb Caribbean/New Orleans food at reasonable prices.
My initial response to your subtitle was “YES!” but this was before hearing about Avi’s poor little finger, so I was definitely referring to the current state of affairs in the USA. I’m very excited to read about your Willamette valley tour, it’s in our backyard. And I hope everybody you meet is kind, welcoming, and drives safely around you and your brood. Let us know if you need anything (Steve has my email). If you are in Portland any amount of time you can find good food at good prices in one of the many food cart “pods”. Everybody in the party can partake of the cuisine of their choice. Down in the valley there may be fewer choices but for kids you can’t go wrong with Burgerville, a regional chain with locally sourced beef and seasonal milkshakes. Try the marionberry. Have fun!
5 years agoOh no! Poor Avi!
5 years agoOK, watch out Lonicera maackii, Laurie is going to rip you out - even if you are endangered in Japan!
Great identifying, Bill!
Nancy, do you think we made fair comment, or unfair comment? Do you require all your literature to be sweet? Would you also not read Bill Bryson (The Lost Continent), our own Jeff Arnim, a huge swath of great literature, or even much of the Bible?
When we see the good and the beautiful we are also free with those comments. You should keep reading, and so benefit from an honest and unbiased coverage.
WOW. There seems to be so many negative things you can find. I think I will stop reading about your journey.
5 years agoLooks like maybe the dreaded amur honeysuckle, which has infested vast swaths of land here in Ohio.

Well that's good. But logging truck is really only a place holder in our fevered minds for the suite of North American hazards: gravel truck, pickup truck, motor home with jeep behind, weekend handyman with trailer headed for dump, and generic yahoo behind a wheel!
5 years agoThat store only has Island Farms ice cream (but quite cheap). No, the one to try is Sweet Meadows, where Kilmalu meets the highway.
5 years agoOh, now I'm thinking that this was day one and you went to that little grocery store where Koksilah meets the highway. And the map is for day two.
5 years agoWas this gelato in Cobble Hill proper? Enquiring minds want to know. We stopped into the new ice cream parlour in Shawnigan the day it opened a month or so ago. They were having a rough day as the smoothie machine was malfunctioning in the heat and was drawing too much electricity for the circuit or something like that. They made us their last customers for the day. Hopefully they got everything ironed out.
5 years agoOh, what a cute little guy! Not that many birds have a black beak - maybe a baby Brewer’s Blackbird?
5 years agoYou’ll see some traffic here and there, but I doubt you’ll see any logging trucks on this route unless you get lost and wander into the hills. I don’t recall ever seeing one on these roads.

We will have 6 or 7 litres on board, but will always be on the lookout for places to refill. The forecast for the coming week is pretty hot!
