Chanvre, as we call cannabis, was once a major crop in France. The fibers were used for everything from rope to textiles. It’s enjoying something of a comeback, mostly due to its utility in eco-friendly construction, where it’s used to reinforce lime plaster, but also as a source of cannabis oils which are touted as natural tonics. There’s a museum dedicated to its historical uses close by us that goes into the whole saga.
