Hey Mark,
I've stayed in that little cottage twice now on bike tours. The couple that run it are very nice, as I'm sure you found out, and it's pretty good deal - and so much nicer than a grungy cheap motel.
Steele, somehow I've never heard about this!
Maybe some current high school students in Flemingsburg could tear themselves away from the smartphones long enough to revive the tradition.
Thanks, Bill. I can always count on you to correctly identify all the flora and fauna I happen across on my tours ;)
3 years agoYup, anole. They used to be sold as chameleons for pets, including in my grandparents’ Variety store. My uncle -their younger son- lived in Houma, Louisiana, where I saw a few inside his house.
3 years agoIn Flemingsburg, before your time and when I was in grade school, some high school kids each year on Halloween would fill a pickup bed with hedge apples - we did call them that-it would be easy for several people to gather that many. Then at the front of the courthouse they’d open the tailgate and the whole load would roll down to the intersection and Water and Main Cross streets. It hasn’t been done since the mid sixties, to my knowledge.
3 years agoHey, Jeff, I just found out you were doing another tour. Your Mom never said anything to me.

3 years agoI a'gree. Seem's kinda risk'y.
3 years agoI stayed at the same place, and saw your comments in the Guest Book!
3 years ago"I'd barely ridden in a month, and hadn't ridden a heavy loaded touring bike in several months." 100 miles?!? "Yeah, I know about getting older" Pffft. :-)
3 years agoUh-oh.... NOW you tell me.
3 years agoThose were everywhere in the area where I grew up, but we just called them lizards. I just looked the little guy up, and he's called a green anole. As kids, when we tried to catch them, the tail would break off and continue wiggling to confuse/distract us "predators" as the lizard would make his escape.
3 years agoAre you sure this is Texas? I see 3 trucks and a car instead of 4 trucks.
3 years agoI like that shot!

Thanks. I spent longer than I should have following that guy around trying to get a decent photo.
