I just had some chouquettes this afternoon from my favourite French bakery here in Seattle!
6 years agoThat is what we thought because ofnthe colouring, but wenhave never seen one so close up and could not be sure. Of course, the young birds do not always exactly look the same as the adults either.
6 years agoLooks like a magpie. You're in France so my guess is Eurasian Magpie.

It's a good spot too. The arena is only a couple of blocks down, and soon beyond that the Boulevard des Lices.
6 years agoI almost fell over when I saw this view - we have the same view. Believe it or not we hadn’t read this part of your journal and when I was looking to see if you had tips for Arles, I discovered we stayed in the same hotel and perhaps same room!
6 years agoBravo! You beat me to it! I had to dig around on the internet. I thought it looked like lupine so I googled French lupine crop, and... yup!
6 years agoThis is a white lupine, a protein crop grown as an alternative to soybeans.

Pro tip: no nibbling on raw lupine seeds.
Crawling along at 10 kph does give the cycle tourist a good chance to observe and question. But on pigeons, the place where we stayed last night was surrounded by them, and their loud cooing caught our attention all night.
Stay tuned for a mystery crop quiz, coming soon!
That one matches common wood pigeon images.

Apparently, there are 4 kinds of pigeons in France.

I keep learning more and more from questions asked by cycle tourists!

Steve,
I won't be doing a German Blog but I will post pictures to Facebook. Janet
Yes, our warmer clothes have been coming on and off like a yo yo. At least we have "permanently" buried our tights at the bottom of the bags, but mornings here still mean lots of sweaters and wind breakers. By afternoon, though, most of it has come off. Dodie bought a new rain cape, but so far it has not been used.
We are having bad luck ever getting together. We will be back home in July, but August 6-10 we are scheduled to go cycling with the Seattle kids.
Will you be doing a Germany blog?
Ah, so that would explain why they are out here in the woods, instead of on the streets of New York.
