My wife and I stop at a pasty shop in Butte (another big mining town) every time we drive out to see her family in Spokane. It's not bad, but it's not quite like a U.P. pasty. Maybe next time we'll have to make a short detour to test an Anaconda pasty.
4 months agoI hate to be a copout but, for me, the most important thing is the crust AND the filling. They're equally important. But mostly the filling. And mostly the crust too. I have the same indecision when asked that question about pizza crust vs. pizza toppings.
4 months agoI absolutely did not make the Lawry's Spices/Lawry's Pasties connection. But you're probably right . . . there IS no connection. Great comment.
4 months agoNope, my head and body weight created its own little hole. I haven't done a headstand in a while, so I kind of surprised myself that day--not so much that I can still do it, but that I can run out there and do it in the 10-seconds my phone timer gives me.
4 months agoSon of Bing Bong's disc brakes are great, but I've had decent rim brakes too. The ones on The Reckless Mr. Bing Bong are WAAAY better than the ones on that 1980 Motobecane road bike--even when wet.
4 months agoI did feel a guilty about how easy my job was, especially after hearing from some of the afternoon crew. They were assigned to the same building, had to do so much more work. I have a nephew who is working in food service at St. Thomas University. Like you, he's enjoying the things he's learning about food prep.
4 months agoGreat tour - thanks for showing us the U.P. from your perspective after having spent some years there in your youth. Sorry you had the rain but happy you got some tent time and lots of pasties. What is the make or break part of the pasty - the crust or the filling?
Nigel and I still laugh about an absolutely horrid one I got here in Oz back circa 1999. I didn't have a lot of pasty experience at that point nor many years in Oz, but my goodness, it was terrible (crust and filling)! His sausage roll wasn't much better (that place is gone now).
Well done! Did you have to dig a little hole for your head before commencing?
4 months agoGlad you had a gorgeous day with gorgeous views in some favourite places on you last day of the tour. You definitely made the most of your ride, even with inclement weather along the way.
4 months agoWhat fun! As long as you get the angle right.....
4 months agoOkay, good to have signage here, but also good they still let you walk out there. I can see how it could get pretty dicey pretty quickly!
4 months agoAlways good to be able to revisit where you used up one of your nine lives. I don't care about a lot of tech, but I found the hydraulic disc brakes on my mtn bike to be life-changing. You have demonstrated how they could be life-saving too! I can imagine the terror and adrenaline you must have felt afterward all those years ago with no brakes!
4 months agoGreat tour of your alma mater - I never realised Marquette was a college town. Must have been nice to remember some good times and get a pasty. Shame about the rain.
4 months agoI actually enjoyed my job in college and I learned alot about food safety and hygiene... and a lot about life from the full time, permanent staff. I worked pretty hard though - it wasn't a fluff job - but it was still fun since I had loans and wasn't depending on the job to survive. Jobs all of a sudden stop being fun when you have to budget and be an adult, lol.

What a hoot! A gal at my exercise class today had a sweatshirt on that said “ copper harbor”… I didn’t know it’s in the U.P! The zip code was hidden in the middle of the sweatshirt, with MI above it. I commented about pasties and she said “ oh, we ALL have our favorite places to get those delicacies”.. “ mine will remain unknown” 😳
