Maybe if they had used delicious Austin cheese and peanut butter snack crackers, you'd feel differently about the vegetarian meal.

After seeing this set of photos, I can't imagine that any reader wouldn't want to visit Ha Tien!

I don't think I've ever heard a meal described as 'stupid' before.

But 'stupid' very aptly describes sugary crackers on top of rice .. bleh!

Glad you were able to wash it down with com tam.

Also - Ha Tien sounds like a great place to spend a few days.

I had some Cipro leftover from a previous trip but that’s the first thing we purchase over there, because it’s dirt cheap and no prescription is needed. I don’t take it unless I need to because it can be quite problematic with long-term side effects. But it’s something I am not allergic to and it does the job.

Nice that you had Cipro with you! Did you get it in Vietnam or in US before you left?

An attempt at an appropriate limerick:

If you are a tree in Thot Not
Your shape is a cone, not a knot.
The pruners are friends
They cut off your ends
In form of a cone, as they ought!

I tend to lean toward Gay's opinion on this. I'm sure they enjoy the company and new friendships they form within the group, and they certainly have a different mode of cycling than we do, but deep down I think they know they are wimps, even if they are more buff and ride faster and further.

We experienced the same thing when encountering organized groups. At best there were a few brief greetings while they kept moving but none seemed interested in talking. My perspective was they thought they were better than me, with my lack of spandex and fancy jersey and my smelliness and beard and less-than-huge calves. Gay (our riding companion) says that people on tour groups are intimidated by self-supported cyclists.
There truth is probably somewhere in between. The group mentality can be an important element during a long tour. Most that I saw during Undaunted Porridge seemed to be having less fun than we did.

Well, there is a goodly proportion of Catholics in this area so no doubt he knows what “666” means and is warning people that this humble watch repairman is a badass and won’t be taking any guff.

I love the "My Time My Decision". Might make it my retirement mantra.

But the '666' next to it? Or maybe they're upside down g's. I wonder if it has any special meaning for the shop owner?
