This time of year and the next couple months most likely females looking for a good spot to lay eggs. Mostly they stay in the water, emerging occasionally to bask on a log or whatever sticking out of the water.

Some PI vines around here are over an inch and a half in diameter and reach far into the tree... Not gonna climb up to see how far though! But I don't hesitate to pull out my little folding saw and make it start all over again. Years ago in KY, I measured a leaf that was over 18 inches for a single leaflet of the 3. Never seen any as big since though.

Actually a hoverfly (flower fly). There are many species of them that mimic various wasps or bees. This looks like a good match with photos of black-shouldered drone fly.
