Looks like a tent caterpillar.

Your description of the mud made me think the movie "Forrest Gump" and the description of the various types of shrimp.. Boiled shrimp, fried shrimp, shrimp scampi, shrimp creole, steak and shrimp, shrimp and potatoes...... Not the ideal terrain to be biking through, I'm sure.

That definitely does not look like a normal bug bite! Glad you got it checked out.

“Until we see a rock, we roll!” To this I answer with the quote: "Go that way, real fast. When something gets in your way, turn." (from the movie, Better Off Dead)

I shall keep a look out for it. The MD section of the AT is “normally” conducted as part of the “4-state” challenge. You begin at the VA/WV line, just southwest of Harper’s Ferry and then completes at the PA/MD border (Mason-Dixon line). It’s about 42 miles and you hike it in 24 hours. I’ll put a reminder in my GPS to stop and look for the Twinkie

Interesting about the Guinness world records. I know of 1 Dutch lady older than 67 who has ridden east-west across the U.S. twice. I never even knew such records existed - now I'll have to check them out! Thanks for that bit of info.
FWIW, I did some research a few years back, and at that time it seems that the oldest person known to successfully cross the continent on the Transam route self-supported was a 78 year old gentleman. So us 70-year-olds are still spring chickens I suppose.
