Why was the last stretch to Wakkanai unpleasant? Was it road conditions, drivers or the weather?

6 years agoGreat shot of the castle. This was maybe my favorite site in Japan.
6 years agoWarm and dry with a bottle of wine - not much to argue with there!. Good luck for better weather!

6 years agoHi John
Thank you. We probably would have been safe camping but thought it would be prudent to check into a hotel. In the end it made for a better night's rest.
Regards
Jean-Marc
Hey, Jean-Marc, glad to know that you guys are OK. We heard the reports of the typhoon with its 200 km/h winds, but didn't know where those were or where you are. If you slept through it all, you chose your shelter well!
Safe journeys, John Saxby
Nice photo of sleeping cyclist!!
6 years agoHi Scott
Hopefully we can stick to the plan and cycle the length of the main islands. Japan was such a great experience for us last year that we had to go back for a second bite. I'll try and provide as much useful info as I can in the journal.
Regards
Jean-Marc
Hi Steve.
I don't think language should ever be a barrier. Google Translate is great if you are stuck and a friendly smile works in any language. When in a new country we try and learn the basic greetings, please/thank you and some counting but mostly we just get by without much English and lots of gesticulating.
Regards
Jean-Marc
Oh goody - we have been thinking about cycling in Japan but the language barrier has kept us from pursuing it. Looking forward to following your adventures in hopes we will feel more comfortable with the idea.
6 years agoI’m so excited to see this journal, and will love following along. We biked from Narita to Fukuoka years ago, and are sketching out plans for a second tour in a few years. It will be great to reminisce and get ideas.

Hi Susan. This was a few years ago but if I recall correctly, apart from the weather, entrance to the city was over a steep hill on a narrow busy road. I know that we were cold and wet and just wanted get into a hot shower. Regards Jean-Marc.
