Just discovered your journal. Thanks for sharing the adventure. An impressive ride!
2 days agoKia ora Carolyn, been doing a bit of summer cycle blog reading and found yours. Enjoyed the details and the pics. You chose a really interesting and challenging route, but we are also always interested in how Kiwis manage the tyranny of distance when flying, and especially with bikes. Your solution to store ebikes over the winter seems like a really practical solution to the ‘no battery on planes’ issue. Although we've used ‘bio bikes’ so far, I sense the day of electrification may be looming. Thanks for the details of your ride. Michael
2 days agoHi Lyle, thanks for all your comments which were fun to read! And it's a big thank you for that fabulous journal you wrote, which I was referencing the whole way, including food recommendations. One of the best meals of the trip was at Lasai in Bilbao. After that meal Bruce said let's just copy them from here on in. A delicious lunch at Pont 9 in Camprodon (I think we even sat at the same table). And we were really looking forward to those scallops at Mala Gana in Sant Llorenc, but the restaurant has closed down (I think we ended up at the pizza place). Hopefully you're planning a 2025 trip!
2 months agoEvery trip is enhanced by a good train story - after the fact of course! Thanks for the journal and the chance to get your perspective of this lovely part of the world.
2 months agoB&W adds a fantastic perspective. Lovely photo
2 months agoI guess the other 5 were off on a break.
2 months agoGreat shot!
2 months agoLooks like this is an everyday occurrence in Torla. We had cows in the tunnel entering town and sheep(each on with a bell) by the hotel window at daybreak.
2 months agoGreat that you met Dany and Lucia. Didn't know that they also ran this little bar (it was closed tight when we were there!)
2 months agoFunny, we didn't see the Bar sign! there were so many sheep around making so much noise that that was our focus.
2 months agoIt really is spectacular country!
2 months agoI'm just echoing Steve and Robyn's comments. Great to see your journal and trip here. Although it's territory we went through recently, it's always refreshing, and feels like something new, to see it through someone else's eyes and experience.
2 months agoUs too! We're quite happy to sit around watching life unfold around us. We have conversations making up the imagined stories of people around us, who they might be, what they do, what's going on at the table etc
2 months agoYour train story was scarier! Seeing one of us pull out of the station without the other would be my worst train nightmare.
We were so close this time, it has to happen one of these years!
Kia Ora Michael, thanks so much for reading!
10 hours agoI've also read many of your great journals. We too are very interested in other kiwi's challenges of distance and their very NZ take on things. We are so glad we found somewhere to store our bikes which has made for easy stress free travel. The route we did this time was certainly challenging and we couldn't have done it without Ebikes. We love that they have enabled us to take on terrain that we wouldn't have considered otherwise. Mountain cycling is hugely rewarding. I really admire the two of you on your 'bio' bikes!
Do you have another tour planned for 2025?
