I enjoyed the journal, thanks for writing it! Someday I may bike the Pacific Coast Route - would you recommend riding from north to south or vice versa? And when is the best time of year to start the ride? Best of luck on your future tours,
1 year agoQuitting caffeine is no fun! I quit drinking coffee 6 weeks ago, but hopefully it's only for a few more months. Life is too short to be totally caffeine free (ditto with alcohol). Best of luck, anxious to read the rest of the journal.
1 year agoYour tour brought back lots of great memories to me. I did it in the opposite direction in 1972 at the age of 17 with 2 friends. In addition to the incredible beauty of the coastline, it was our first taste of a real adventure. We were young, on our own, and free!
I've lost all my pictures from that trip somewhere in the intervening 50 years, but your journal made it come alive again in my aging brain. Thanks for that!
Nice tour. Thanks for taking us along.

1 year agoBut do not try to enjoy it if you are riding a bike, because "cars rule".

Glad you enjoyed it! It seems like more people ride north-to-south. That way you are on the side of the road closer to the ocean, and it seems like the winds are in your favor. A friend of mine rode south-to-north but faced strong headwinds.
1 year agoThe ACA website has some info on riding conditions:
"Because coastal traffic tends to be even heavier in summer, we recommend that you ride in the spring or autumn. May and September through October are the best months. During summer, strong winds prevail from north to south."
