Might be sharp-shinned. Hawks give me fits! They are so variable and similar, but the rounded head might be evidence to call it sharp-shinned... on the other hand, that might just be the angle of the shot. The tail does look kind of long...
I agree with you!

Bummer! I was hoping for another new bird. But you're correct about the variability between birds - especially if they are immature.
2 years agoDidn't think of that! We put out sliced oranges which several different birds like.
2 years agoGreat shot! Even better if it were a lemon though.
2 years agoI'm leaning toward house finch. Looking at the photos, it just seems to fit. But with most little brown birds, variability is a real challenge!

Hmmm. Possibly.
2 years agoYes, it is strange.
2 years agoWe have KN95 masks that we wear to stores etc. My dentist claims that no mask protects you 100% but we'll keep wearing ours except when we dance as it's too hard to breathe with one on. Hopefully our vaccinations and boosters will provide some protection.
2 years agoJust wondering if all the recent rain has provided enough food for the birds that they don't come around to get it near human habitation?
2 years agoI think you were right about this being Lemmon, now that I see what Kimball actually looks like. I was just focused on what seems like it would be visible from the state park.
2 years agoI haven’t seen anything but Gila woodpeckers either - and fewer birds in general, though I have seen a couple of cardinals dash past. The population really seems down this year.
2 years agoMaybe so! Did you notice the 3 doors? Are they emergency exits? The middle one had a steep wood ramp going out of it but they'd retracted it when I got around to taking this picture. Probably a dog ramp.
2 years agoThanks Scott. I've noticed that we're seeing a lot fewer varieties of woodpeckers now vs when we were here in December 2020. I wonder why? We also had bluebirds and cardinals at our feeders then.
2 years agoThanks Bill!

It looks like a Cooper’s hawk to me, but the main indicator is the size difference. The rule of thumb I’ve read is that Coppers are about the size of a crow and sharp shined about the size of a jay.
2 years agoMore importantly though, what a terrific shot! Where did you see this guy?
