Happy Birthday, Jeff. Sorry you finished your ride early. Always love how amusing you tales are, and the great pictures of a world where it looks like time stands still. I haven't been through the poor areas of the south in a long time. Seems crazy that the level of poverty is still so pervasive, given how rich the US population is.
Keep riding my friend. Maybe I'll see you at a race in Maysville again sometime!
I enjoyed following along on your tour through an area I'll never go to (my list is very long and it's not on it).
I guess I'm opposite to you in that I love extended trips, perhaps because I couldn't do anything like that for decades. I'm happy to go solo because then I don't feel pressured to catch up to my husband, but it's nice having his company too. We haven't done more than 4 weeks together, though, because we've always had work commitments.
Thanks Jeff, I really enjoyed following along on your tour. Sorry to see it end so soon, but I completely understand. Hopefully you'll get out for another short tour soon.
3 years agoI love the view your pictures give of rural Alabama and Mississippi. Thanks for posting. Sorry your trip has come to an end but I know the feeling when you heart isn't in it - then it's time to stop.
3 years agoThanks for taking us long for the ride, Jeff. I’m sorry for us that you’re ending early, but sympathetic. I doubt I could stick with a solo trip for this long any more either.
3 years agoThanks, Greg.
Well, I ignored your suggestion to Keep up the good work, and came home yesterday after reaching the Mississippi.
The route was great and low-traffic, and people were friendly, but I had too many distractions, mostly work-related. Also, I think I get too homesick nowadays on tours longer than a couple of weeks.
I'm still glad I did this, and might try some of the western route in the future.
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
I've been reading all along, but I figured I'd have plenty of time to post a comment about how much I've enjoyed your journey. Next thing I knew, you were only a day away from the Mississippi River. Heck, you're almost half-way across the country already.
On my bike trip from New Orleans to Lake Superior I spent a couple of hours relaxing at the Natchez National Historic Site. It was weirdly cool, disturbingly anti-bellum, and relaxing all at the same time. Maybe you stopped there by this time, maybe you've already gone by, but I just thought I'd mention it.
Keep up the good work.

I just read on the AP news feed that a Little Debbie truck in Mississippi was robbed by a guy on a bicycle. Hmmmmm.

3 years agoTime will tell. Not in the cards yet, but then I’m only 74. No rush.

Thanks, Maureen. I appreciate the kind words.
3 years agoI'll probably be in Maysville later again this year for the annual Limestone Cycle Tour event. That's always a fun time.m
