We are nestled in at Barcelona for one night and reading your blog . We, too, are thrilled to see you are in the Vercors. It is so incredibly beautiful. The ride through the gorge, downhill, and Pont en Royans....I adore it. Enjoy your unloaded explorations of the Vercors 🥰
5 years agoFollowing you daily. I am off to Winnipeg tomorrow for a week and just taking my phone but I should be able to see your journey there. It looks fabulous! You are in my thoughts and prayers. Love to you both.
5 years agoScott we thanked you a thousand times today. We rode up to Col de la Machine and it was one of the most amazing experiences we have had on a bike. Just astonishing. We were toying with the idea of doing Col de l’Echarsson as well but the road was fermé so that decision was made for us. Time for a beer.
5 years agoOh, hooray! I was hoping you would make it to the Vercors and get decent enough weather to appreciate it. Isn’t it the most incredible place though? It may be the spot in France I most hope to get back to some day.
5 years agoWe are heading up that way in a few minutes We tried to get your hotel. There were no rooms left so are staying at a chamber d’hôte a few km down the road. Hopefully it will be good too. I am going to be looking for men holding up buildings as we leave Grenoble. My motto in these old cities is look up!

5 years agoSometimes it’s men, though not as often. I know the female figures are called caryatids and I think the male ones might be Atlases.
5 years agoAre you headed for Pont en Royans next? If so, consider the Hotel du Royans. It’s two years later and Al is still taking about their coffee.

5 years agoKeith of course, but I beat him to the cafè! The views were amazing. We are in Grenoble now and the weather has improved. We hope that continues.
5 years agoCongrats on your ride over the Montée de Semnoz...that is a long steady climb with fantastic views as rewards! Glad the weather is getting a little warmer and drier for you. Your journey sounds amazing so far! We're off to Sardinia in the morning...stay tuned.

5 years agoOh yes, “he had me at bonjour” -we can relate to that. Nonetheless we persevere in trying to speak in the local language and it is worth it for the smiles we receive, no matter how much we have mangled the language.

We really love your photos. As we enjoy your journal, we both comment that we would love to be there. One day, and thanks for the inspiration.
It is truly an amazing place to cycle. We lucked out today. We had to move to new accommodations which put us at the base of the Col de la Machine. No planning here ... just a fluke. We got to our Chambre d’Hote around 2:00, had a quick sandwich and headed up on the advice of our host. We agreed that it was the most dramatic stretch of road we have ever cycled as we approached the summit. Looking forward to following along with you two.
