Looks like tamarindo. Agua de tamarindo is very good.

Hang tight your senses could be overwhelmed tomorrow at the market. Total chaos. Have fun.
3 years agoWhat! Oh no! I wonder if it was a special the day I was there. Either way, you missed out as mole is delicious. Are you in Merida for another day as we could treat you to a good taco place with around 20 tacos to choose from. Unfortunately no mole.
3 years agoWe went there for supper but no mole on the menu. Maybe somewhre else?

3 years agoWait, that’s like 20 euros, right? For lunch for 2? Doesn’t sound too bad to me for a big city. And in the name of culinary research, some sacrifices must be made I guess. I’m sorry you didn’t reach Poc Chuc nirvana but I’m secretly happy that the search goes on. :)
3 years agoWell, you guys beat me to it... Not completely convinced because of the little warts on the branch... Still, nothing else I could dig up looked similar. Good leaf shape and fruit shape, maybe not quite hairy as the photo either.
Sometimes it is tough to be sure.
Welcome to Merida. Talking about food - have you tried Mole? It doesn't look appetizing, somewhat like the relleno negro, but it's rather quite delicious and especially if you like chocolate. I can recommend an inexpensive restaurant just off the square called las vigas on calle 63. Enjoy your time in Merida.

Fancier than in Germany, or at least in my town!

Hi,
3 years agoThe Britannica has this as a calabash tree, not to be confused with the (unrelated) calabash vine.
