I am sure this journal will be helpful to prepare the next cyclist. Thanks for taking me along with you this far!

Really enjoyed this - the route sounds tough as heck (I got thirsty just reading about it) so pretty understandable. No point smashing yourself against something that's stopped being enjoyable.

It's a very, very challenging route. At least the New Mexico and Colorado portions, which is all I know about, because my wife and I decided we'd had enough of the Great Divide in Colorado, and abandoned it for a much easier, mostly-paved route to Canada.

It really took a mental toll on me, and I would have probably not made it to Grants on my own.

It's tough.

I enjoyed your journal!

Disappointing, but you have to do what your body and mind tells you.
I have enjoyed your journal.

Thanks for this, really enjoying the account. I got a proper chuckle re. the "trail names" - just mumbling "cool" and turning away :-D

"We started the climb and were becomig increasingly angry. "

This is definitely bringing back memories of my time on the New Mexico portion of the Great Divide.

This is bringing back memories of my own attempt at the Great Divide, which nearly broke me.

Yeah, I can't help but feel a certain amount of contempt for the type backpackers who seem to revel in their dirtiness. It's like they're thru hiking as an excuse to realize their dream of being filthy all the time.

My wife and I stayed at the Toaster House when we did the Great Divide, and it was surely one of the grungiest places I've ever stayed. And I've stayed in some pretty nasty places while bike touring.

I don't get "they come for washboard"
I do everything possible to avoid it!

This is great. It’s like reading a Cormac McCarthy novel.

Pie Town, really?! Does everyone grow their own food in Pie town? How can there be no grocery?
