Wayne Estes commented on Day 14: Hot Sulfur Springs to Dillon. Ute pass.

I hope your tour is going well with minimal smoke. I didn't know that Ute Pass is on the Great Divide route. I only saw other cyclists when I was on the TransAmerica route for a couple days.

Wayne I did the climb over Ute pass today (in the same direction as you did it) on my section tour of the ACA Great Divide route. I’m going from Jackson Hole to Del Norte. Saw 2 other touring cyclists coming up the pass from HWY 9 and it looked steeper coming from Silverthorne.

Thanks for letting me know about your visor. Good that it's been serving you so well after all these years!

This is a thin carbon fiber "Spider visor" sold by my old friend John Stephens who was living in southern California at the time. I have two of them. They sold out about 20 years ago. They weigh only about 10 grams and are generally meant for recumbent cyclists who need a longer visor than upright cyclists. That's because recumbent cyclists ride "facing up" instead of "facing down" like upright cyclists. Kelly has a larger, heavier visor that looks like a small version of "Da Brim".

You have an interesting visor or your bicycle helmet in this picture - did you make it or buy it online? I miss having a visor on my helmet - - they don't come with them anymore. :/

The Pony Express only ran from 1863-1865. Victory Hotel isn't that old. But I can certainly believe that it was built as a stagecoach stop. Maybe there was also a railroad through the valley?

I came back to this journal to link Buddy Hall your Douglas Pass day. You had a good description of the difficulty of the day. He can make an informed decision!

Note - I cannot get google to confirm - but I was told that the Victory Hotel in Maybell was once a Pony Express stop. Google does not quickly confirm that for me. Images on google don't show the express going into Colorado at all. I wonder if there were spurs of the route, to deliver the mail regionally, as I know of an old cabin (now added onto and turned into a home), here in Rifle that was also supposed to be part of the Pony Express route.
