The name is derived from their habit of being easily habituated to human company. They are often found around camp sites and where edible human detritus can be found. The Afrikaans name is Gewone Spekvreter, or Common Fat-Eater, because they used to eat the lard that used to grease the axles of the ox wagon during South Africa's early colonial past.

Nice succulent flowers. Looks like a Jacaranda on the corner and Pepper tree on the right. Mediterranean climate here too. people are replacing their large lawns.
