We followed his progress on a daily basis, and were agog. At 58, he was just hoping to finish, but far exceeded even his own expectations.
3 weeks agoYou previously asked about him and I didn't answer because I didn't want to spoil the surprise, but you were right!
You have a great memory.
Congratulations to Klaus! That is fantastic!
3 weeks agoBoth still looking fit, just like in the old days in th USA.
3 weeks agoI half suspected you were going to meet!
3 weeks agoI have ridden the Columbia Gorge, but it was way back in 1991 so I don't remember seeing Bingen. I do remember having a ridiculous tailwind that pushed me almost 120 miles that day without even having to pedal.
3 weeks agoAccording to the books and journals I've read about Cake Morality, which is quite the engaging topic, when you ride 4,000 kilometers in 2-3 weeks, you have an ethical and moral imperative to eat as much cake as possible. For your health, and for ummm, ethics and errrr, morals.
3 weeks agoHonoured to get a namecheck, Mr B. I think I'd need an immoral amount of cake to make that ride worthwhile though. Hats off to Klaus, and also to you and Heather for another successful tour, and a predictably compelling journal. Let's hope for more miles in the near future! 👍
3 weeks agoIf you ever ride the Columbia Gorge on the Washington side, we have a Bingen as well.
3 weeks agoToddlers are gonna bump their heads. They walk like little drunks. Plus, they usually need an adult to help them. I could totally see myself ducking under the turnstile to help my toddler.
3 weeks agoRouting for sports teams too: "Yea! We did it! We crushed them!"
3 weeks agoOh, of course! ;)
3 weeks agoAgreed. I really liked the stairs, in spite of having to carry all of our gear up them.
3 weeks agoYeah, it's a loooong way down from there, but knowing these Germans, they probably engineered it so that it's almost impossible for a vehicle to go off the side. Plus, of course, EVERYone heeds warning signs so they'll all be driving more safely. ;-)

Oooh, math! “If #58 goes 5km at 10km/hr, and #59 goes the same distance at 2km/hr, what happens to #34?”
