"Fearlessness" is how I describe it. My wife, Heather, uses a completely different word. :-)
1 year agoBoy, was I relieved to see this picture after your suspenseful set-up. Even so, speaking as a person who has never been shaved by somebody else, I think you showed amazing fearlessness by exposing your jugular like that.
1 year agoIt looks a lot more comprehensive than it is, and almost everything is really lightweight... not because it's expensive gear, but because things like chapstick, tweezers, stamps, and dental floss don't weigh much. There are a lot of items, but there's no stove, fuel, cold weather gear, or anything a person needs for a REALLY extended tour. Plus, I probably underpacked. :-)

1 year agoMemories! In college, I ran a PBX machine night shift for a semester... Ours had a headset instead of a handset plugged in.

1 year agoWow - your bike with gear only weighs 68.4 pounds! That's the lightest fully-loaded-for-touring setup I have ever heard of. Add some water and food and you're still under 75 pounds - that's amazingly light, especially considering that you have a pretty comprehensive gear list.
1 year ago"It's the wind that's demoralizing." Yeah, I'm with you on this one. My hardest day ever was due to an unexpectedly strong wind encountered in the long valleys north of Rawlings, Wyoming. I'll take a steep hill climb any day over the Wyoming wind. I'm still scared of the Wyoming wind - the thought of it gives me nightmares - it's a killer wind. But it would be a good death, a warrior's death battling against a monster Wyoming wind. Someday...
1 year agoJust noticed this journal, looking forward to reading it. The Southern Tier is "on my list" of routes that I might ride someday, so I'll take notes as I read this journal.
1 year agoI think you might be on to something! It makes a lot of sense because there must be rabbits in the area.
1 year agoThe only thing I could find using Google is that "lop" is also a kind of rabbit with hanging ears. Hence the term "lop eared".
Maybe that makes a little more sense?
Cane cholla. Lots of it don there!

"Ein Dunkel," shouted towards the barmaid with one thumb raised. That worked well for me in 2019, and is nearly the extent of meine deutsche. If I had a personal beer coach I'm sure I would have learned other ways to ask for a bier, but I had to struggle on my own.
