I'm sure it's not what Dodie wants to hear, but she might consider a recumbent at the point her wrists are too much of a problem. My friend Jan, whom I toured Arizona with last Thanksgiving, has aero bars on her road bike to avoid putting weight on her arthritic wrists. We had to stop any number of times to give her wrists a break. Jan has often laughed at my recumbent, but I ultimately couldn't help pointing out that there's no weight at all on my wrists. Her wrists were enough of a problem that Jan did buy a recumbent, and seems quite happy with it. Her husband bought one also, so they could more easily ride the same speed. In the meanwhile, I hope Dodie finds a good solution. Chronic pain is no fun.
2 years agoThanks for sharing your visit to the Sikh temple. So informative and interesting. Enjoying your blog I hope you can have your bike fixed soon.
2 years agoThe assist was disappointingly in and out, but it did helpfully come to life on two gnarly hills!
I have tried "hold the sausage but double the bacon" without much success. Dodie has tried building the breakfast up as a series of sides. That can work.
Glad you managed the train OK. Did your e-assist continue to work? Also fyi, if/when you do decide to order the Full English, the standard way to order is by specifying the ‘minuses,: e.g., minus the beans, minus the black pudding.
2 years agoThe got wet part makes sense, since it died in the rain on the White Cliffs. And since the thing proved to be not totally dead, just mostly dead, it seems it could come back. Our mechanic at Fairfield Cycle is coincidentally Max. We need Miracle Max for mostly dead.
Anyway, yeah, we are thinking same as Rachael.
Rachael had an interesting thought this morning. There have been a few times when my phone has gotten water penetration and won’t charge for awhile; but it’s always desiccated within a day or two and then behaved normally again. Maybe yours got wet somewhere critical also and has dried out?
2 years agoI used to work in a furniture shop that sold those lovely propellers as curios.
2 years agoThanks Scott, enen with the assist maybe working we are confident that the tangle of roads and sidewalks would keep us from making the distance. So we are standing at Gravesend station right now, ready to launch into the tangle of London rail lines!
2 years agoSo far this morning the darn thing is working, but it's less relevant when cycling means mostly walking, on sidewalks or single tracks. We are at a train station right now, trying to get away from London a bit. It feels weird to have to be so whiney!
2 years agoI really enjoyed your Sikh temple experience!
I guesss partial support is better than no support. But it does keep you in a state of suspense, never knowing if and when you'll get it. Good luck!
Not a chance!!!
2 years agoDid you try the jellied eels?
2 years agoJust a reminder that the ferry doesn’t run on Sundays, in case your controller is working in the AM and you’re tempted to bike instead of taking the train.
2 years agoThey are rather crude machines. The Hurricane was a wood framed, cloth covered machine. Both originally used wood propellers. But that RR Merlin engine they shared produces one of the most beautiful mechanical sounds in the world.

I really think you need to venture in to one of these places. Just for the Full Touristic Experience, you understand...
