When my sister arrived at a B&B in the evening before catching the Dover ferry. The lady opened the door, took one look at her and her bike and yelled, I don't take cyclists, and left her standing on the doorstep in the rain and failing light. She ended up having to cycle quite a way to the nearest camp site. Luckily very little traffic at that time in the evening. Must be something in the water around the to make B&B owners disagreeable.

No, unfortunately I'll still be touring down south. I'll probably catch a train back to Paris from Lyon on the 27th, if things go as planned. Sorry to miss meeting you and Dodie. Wishing you a great time in France.

We should arrive in Maisons Lafittes on Tuesday the 18th and are thinking of staying for at least a few (?3) days. Will you be in town then?

Bienvenue en France! When do you expect to be in Paris?

We did not see the immigration man counting on his fingers to see if we were eligible to return, but he did scan the passports so presumably the computer gave us the OK. We are actually a few days late for coming back in at the earliest possible moment.

Now we will have to eat French food like crazy, until we begin to wish we were in Germany!

It must go back to the late Victorian/early Edwardian eras when seaside holidays in luxury were a thing.

Hello Steve and Dodie,
It was lovely to meet you in our bike shop in Littlehampton, pleased we could help you out. You're both an absolute inspiration and we wish you every success for safe and more enjoyable travels in France.

Sorry to read the account your stay at the Newhaven B&B. I experienced similar elsewhere in England with pettyminded B&B owners, which is why we now only stay either in hotels, pubs with rooms above or campsites, which seem to be far more accommodating to cyclists.

We'll keep reading your blog and details of your travels. We love the pictures and details of your routes. So helpful to others planning similar visits.

With every best wish from us both - by now hopefully, you're both safely across the channel and in France. As we said, Diepee is lovely and the Avenue Verte, a real pleasure to ride.

Ps We are waiting at the ferry terminal now, and casually looking at the Accueil Velo web site. It"s less convenient to find a place that way, but bike friendliness is so important, particularly after last night.

So true. Sometimes people leave a comment in a review about the good spot provided for their bicycle. Dodie looks for these and will choose a place based on that. Unfortunately, often a booking is nonrefundable and one can only ask about bike storage after the reservation has been made. It is very frustrating.

The issue of whether a place can provide a secure place for bikes is a thorny one because it’s generally not addressed in the description. We’ve only been in an unacceptable situation once, but I recommended to Booking.com that places include this information. Enjoying your trip! Michael

What a great picture. It illustrates the situation perfectly.

You are so right. We are really tired of the soggy, greasy English breakfast, and the weak bread at all times.
