I usually go by what my (paper) map indicates, if it's not something I've checked on StreetView at home. I just checked, and ViaMichelin dot com presents the same information. In general, white is better than yellow which is better than red for cyclists, and skinny is almost always better than wide. The only exception I've found so far was along the Gorges de Verdun. While both roads are shown as thin, the road on the north side (D952) is red, while the road on the south side (D71) is yellow. But the north road is actually better for cycling because there is less traffic (based on comments from Scott A and observations when we rode it).

Mom here, you are sooo right, and the whining about relatively inexpensive tartellettes will immediately cease. See the blog for Thursday, November 3.

Good point, duly noted.

Your stingy bakery assessment has touched a nerve for those of us who would love love love a French tart, at any price. Moreover 2.50 euros is just $3.36 CDN. Why go to France if not to eat all the tarts?? You’ll both be crying when you’re buying poison cakes at Costco!!

And we live in Cobble Hill so you would think we would understand rocks in the roads!

From past experience we have found the higher number D roads to be a pretty terrifying ride, but this was totally ridiculous and dark was falling, so D933 here we went.

No trucks are permitted on the roads on Sunday. Also the drivers seem to be much calmer and drive slower.

To me, the road would have to be pretty darn bad to choose this instead. It reminds me of some of the rail trails I found myself on in Brittany.

They would be much more picturesque if not facing such a wide expanse of asphalt.

Read your comments on the D933 with interest Steve, we cycled it recently and found it mostly fine, but possibly because it was a Sunday. We’d read the Classen’s blog where they’d gone to the office of tourism and had a route mapped out. Ann told them that they’d appeared in a blog and they were gratified to know they’d been of use to someone!
Bonne route, Michael

Still not rideable, especially on 20 inch wheels.

We bailed to the road after about 10 km of intermittent garbage like this. Slow learners!

Confusing at the very least.
