We are glad the French had not forgotten how to do these after the end of our last visit!
2 years agoAgreed. This morning, still hungry after petit dejeuner I broke ranks and went for a millefeuilles. These are more challenging than eclairs in terms of getting on the beard!
2 years agoThey're left looking quite grotesque after being so heavily pruned, aren't they?
2 years agoWe've come to call eclairs "French Power Bars". That makes them acceptable fuel for cycling.
2 years agoYou two have driven up the price all by yourselves!
2 years agoHi,
Clever idea to get through Lyon. But Part Dieu is always a mess. Someday the old trains will be retired and getting on with a bike will become easier for everybody. Someday.
Cheers,
Keith
So much easier moving into an apartment that is not ground floor with this than carrying stuff up flights of stairs. Saw one of these in operation in Trani last May. Wish My move could have been done this way.
2 years agoHi,
After the harvest, the only grapes that remain on the vines are the second flush, the ones that got a late start. Even the birds don’t eat them until all the first flush is gone, and they are rarely harvested because they are usually quite sour. Gotta come earlier in the year for the good ones.
Cheers,
Keith
Foie gras on the hoof! Do you like it?
2 years agoDodge says: Steve is powerful, although not a very large person. Must be from years of farming, throwing hay bales, chopping wood, and stuff.
2 years agoImpressive hoiking, Steve! That's quite a narrow and steep pitch to haul those bikes up!
2 years agoNeither of us are particularly good in hills, especially Dodie, who often has to resort to walking. Adding extra distance and hills is never our preferred option, but in this case just may have been that option had we remembered about it.
2 years agoI might as well jump in here, because we rode this route in the opposite direction in the spring: https://www.cycleblaze.com/journals/europe2022/to-macon/.
We didn’t take either of your options. We completely avoided D933, because it looked too busy on the Google Maps satellite view; and we shunned the veloroute because it looked like there was too much of it still unpaved. Instead, I made up my own route that stuck to the white roads, testing them out on RideWithGPS and Google Maps to confirm they were paved. Not particularly direct and added a few miles and a few hills, but it was an excellent ride the whole way.
That is certainly also our experience. When in doubt, look for a white road going more or less in your direction of travel.

The trees have been pollarded. They used to do that to plane trees here in NZ, but there were a lot of objections about 30 years ago and we don't see that form of pruning anymore.
