I picked up a pamphlet advising Germans on how to emigrate. At first I thought I was reading the German wrong, because one would usually expect advice for immigrants.

I believe the cranes are mostly robotic and programmed now. I saw an episode of some German kids program about it. Maybe Checker Toby? Very interesting and complex moving all the containers around.

Happy birthday, Steve!

My brother lives in Nordenham - when I visited there last year, I took a harbor tour of Bremerhaven and clearly remember our tiny tourist boat cruising past the big car carriers. It was though not only their size that kept me from averting my eyes, but also their blatant ugliness which ist yet to be matched amongst the colorful bouquet of ship species.

While I'm pretty sure an old town no longer exists in Bremerhaven, what does exist is the Deutsches Auswandererhaus, a museum dedicated to migration (focusing on European emigration to the New World in the 19th century), and it is really worth a visit. You can even do research there and find out if any of your family members' names was listed on one of the many emigrant ships that left Bremerhaven.

A thought - perhaps having birthdays is the meaning of life.

During WW2 my uncle was in the airforce. He was on his last raid of his tour of duty bombing the U boat installations at Bremerhaven. On his return his plane was shot down and his body washed up on an outer island. With their efficiency the Germans collected his body and buried it ina Commonwealth WarGrave Cemetery at Sage not far from Bremerhaven. We have visited it a number of times and will do it again if we bike this year

Happy Birthday Steve - Given your fondness for cake I am expecting a photo of a large German cake with many candles and a fire extinguisher nearby.

Always a good time following one of these on a semi going down the freeway.
