2 years agoI was in Mainz several years ago. I was checking out some of the Roman ruins and encountered an older gentlemen who gave me quite a fascinating history lesson. I’m guessing he must have been either incredibly well-read, or a history professor. His English was quite excellent which was helpful. I wasn’t as fluent in German back then as I am now. Mainz has some really fascinating history, even though an awful lot of the city was destroyed during WW2. The church with the blue windows (Chagal maybe?) is an interesting visit. The blue hue inside is pretty neat. There’s really only one small area left with any half-timbered buildings though. I’m sure at one time Mainz had a lot of character.
2 years agoI concur. Beech. Enjoying reading your travels, Grampies!

2 years agoVery smart idea to catch a train! I definitely would have done the same.
2 years agoHi Tricia - we almost did it! But now we are at Mainz and next stop Ludwigshafen! Dodie says we'll come back and catch Fulda and more fairy tales on another trip!
2 years agoHi Marvin, it's good to get a message from you!
Hey, what does Erika think of Dodie's hands (and it's her nose too, actually). We wrote to our dermatologist in Mill Bay, but he failed to answer.
Hi Noreen, it was a nice idea. But, Dodie has already been asleep for almost two hours, and tomorrow - Ludwigshafen!
2 years agoOh golly, you have to go to about 10,000 feet for edelweiss! Also according to wiki: It is a scarce, short-lived flower found in remote mountain areas and has been used as a symbol for alpinism, for rugged beauty and purity associated with the Alps and Carpathians, and as a national symbol, especially of Romania, Austria, Bulgaria, Mongolia, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Italy. According to folk tradition, giving this flower to a loved one is a promise of dedication.
2 years agoGravel and uphill not so great either!
2 years agoNothing like someone behind you calling those things to inspire confidence 😂. Gravel and downhill will never be my friend.
2 years agoI was really hoping for "edelweiss", to mesh with and continue the Julie Andrews theme. Sigh. Ah well, they're pretty enough as it is.
