Is it Ok to like my own photos? And should we start charging finder’s fees?
2 years agoA shame. This is one of my favorite memories from this loop.
2 years agoIt will be a highlight. We were nervous but found that Bikeline greatly overhypes the difficulties. I am looking forward to tomorrow
2 years agoIf you do the Alpe Adria, take good notes about the climb to Bad Gaststein (challenging) and the train, which you’ll have to take at Bockstein through the Trauern Tunnel. For that matter there are some quite challenging climbs south of Salzburg. An option you might consider is hopping a train from Salzburg to Bockstein and then through the tunnel and start biking on the other side. It’s a gorgeous ride the rest of the way, and pretty much all downhill.
2 years agoYup.
2 years agoI’m surprised about your report on the traffic north of Bad Ischl. I remember the road as being fairly quiet, but it was further off peak season then, and tourism was probably still off from Covid.
2 years agoI’ve gotten behind a few days and missed the fact that you’re following in our tire treads. I hope you’re not disappointed, and I look forward to seeing where you stop next.
2 years agoNope. We stayed in Hotel Schernthaner.
2 years agoYou’re right. The lakes here do make you think of the BC interior.
2 years agoFantastic story about the wrong apartment! It reminds me of the night se stayed in a samurai village in Japan, in an era before accurate mapping was available. I created a document with photos of all of our lodgings before leaving home because we knew we wouldn’t be able to locate anything by reading Japanese.
Our traditional inn in this town looked easy to find because the wooden, latticed building looked so distinctive. When we arrived in the small one-street village we were distressed to discover that it looked just like every other structure on the street. No one in the village that we could find spoke any English at all, of course.
Last September we rode almost this same ride that you and Dodie completed - but in the opposite direction. We were much more fortunate with traffic and the hills as we stayed on the main road all along the Attersee. The cycle route continually directed us off the main road into the hills but we stubbornly refused as we wanted to see the lake and there was fortunately very little traffic. But we did think in the summer months this route would not be so pleasant. https://www.cycleblaze.com/edit-item/31907/
2 years agoI really hope you do ride to Grado it is a fantastic route. I will do enjoy seeing it through your eyes. Bike line completely overhyped the difficulty wit hills
2 years agoWe are seriously considering it. Dodie will look at timing and distances tomorrow, but for now it is increasingly tempting.
2 years agoI hope you do the Alpe Adria all the way to Grado!

If you’re headed south on the Tauern Radweg, you should make a quick detour to the water in Golling. It’s a really nice one. You’ll encounter some traffic in the gorge heading south from Golling towards Werfen, but I don’t recall it being overt heavy. I’ll be curious how your bikes handle the hill outside Schwarzach. I recall risk g down it heading from the other way and watching pretty much everyone walk up it, but that was before everyone started riding ebikes. The views from the top are excellent. Tha whole section, minus the hill, is some of the most scenic riding I’ve ever done. I’d do it again in a heartbeat, and might return there next year, public health crisis permitting.
