Maybe dried seaweed?
2 years agoRice, noodles with tofu and...? What's in the pot on the left in the back?
2 years agoYou're right, the home cooking is on an entirely different level! I'll try to sneak in a photo or two.
Thanks for reading! We will continue to do our best to describe the experience.
Congratulations!
2 years agoI am enjoying your ride and the glimpse of Korea you are giving us. Maybe more interesting food with the relatives? I read up a bit on the Korean alphabet, fascinating. Looking forward to your ride on the East Coast Bicycle Path.
2 years agoThis looks like the start of a great tour - I'd love to visit Korea! Looking forward to following along 😀

Thanks, we're happy with things so far! We haven't ridden much this year. We're not in the best of shape. The upcoming mountains may defeat us yet! As for literacy, I'm still working on the basics. I can read and write the alphabet, which is pretty easy. Comprehension and speaking are on a survival level. I leave the complex transactions to my wife, but I try to get out of my comfort zone and interact with people when the stakes are low. I learned a lot yesterday, including the essential 오르막 (uphill) and 내리막 (downhill)!
2 years agoCongrats on a great start! How did you come to be literate in Korean? Very impressive.
2 years agoWe're following you too!
2 years agoYeah, there's something about getting tchotchkes for doing something you would have done anyway, that feels like you're beating the system!
2 years agoI am SO jealous!
2 years agoFantastic news! I’m looking forward to following along with you and Sunyoung.

You are correct! It's 김[kim], or laver. It's been roasted with oil and seasoned with salt. It's a nice accompaniment to rice. I'm not a big fan of sea vegetables, but when given the fast-food treatment, it can be pretty good. I also had 미역국[miyeokguk] with lunch the other day. It's a seaweed soup. I didn't like it at first, but it has grown on me. Hunger from bike touring is a great way to start loving new foods!
