2 weeks agoWe reached Murayama yesterday, which is very close to Yamagata Airport, where you could have caught a flight back to Tokyo (and beyond). I think the Aomori-Yamagata trip could have worked for us, but the schedule would have been tight. We've enjoyed Tohoku so far. You can be the judge of what you might have "missed". It will still be waiting for you whenever you're able to visit.

2 weeks agoGreat to have you aboard! Starting Thursday is the route we would have shared. We're scheduling it a day behind to coordinate with our host in Kazuno. After that, it's full speed ahead, weather permitting!

3 weeks agoQuite amazing Peter Gostelow in his journal A Long Ride Home (2005) on CGOAB also sighted Stuart. He didn't know it was Stuart but I recognized him from the description. " I found myself caught up in the middle of a triathlon. People were lined on the streets and some at first seemed to be cheering me on, until I got closer and they saw that my loaded bike was not designed for racing. The cyclists in fact were going in the opposite direction and the first foreigner I'd seen since leaving Wakkanai a few days earlier was a bean-like figure, who with his head down whizzed past some ten minutes ahead of the remaining Japanese competitors."
Later Peter apologized for calling him a bean-like figure. But as you saw for yourself, it was a fitting description.
