We are going back to Spain in mid September. We feel lucky to be retired and able to go then. I have finished your journal now and really enjoyed it. In Spain and Portugal last year we had some heat (and some surprise rain) but nothing like the temperatures you experienced. That makes things very tough. Loved your ice stories. Aren’t the Spanish ice cubes something? I really enjoyed your journal. Thank you for your time and effort writing it.
1 year agoI do enjoy a more relaxed start to the day also. I look forward to Jacinto retiring, so we can tour during a friendlier weather season. Unfortunately, I don't think that will be any time soon.
Obtaining food continued to be an issue for the entire trip. I did read a Spaniard's comment somewhere about 'how can anyone bicycle on a full stomach'. I stand by my comment on, how can you ride more than ten miles on a croissant!
I am catching up on your journal very late in the game. I was going to comment at the very end about how much I am enjoying it, but your comment about Denny’s made me laugh out loud. I know the feeling. We found Spain in particular to be a challenge last year because they eat dinner about the time we go to bed! Portugal was much better for us and we are slouches in the morning so are always able to take advantage of the breakfast buffet. Back to my reading.
1 year agoI don't know how Portugal handles hunting, there weren't any similar signs. Once back in Spain, we started seeing them again. Thank you for the added details.
1 year agoI had the same question when we were touring in Spain so I looked it up just now. It means “private hunting”or “coto privada de caza.”
From Grazalemaguide.com: “Perhaps the most common sign you will see as almost all landowners use their hunting rights. It also denotes Coto intensivo de caza an area of intensive hunting and Coto deportivo de caza area of sporting game hunting that may be used on a regular basis by local hunting organisations and groups.”
Great following your trip! Thanks for sharing!

1 year agoJust catching up on your journal now, Kelly. Such an American life you’ve had! I hope you enjoyed your trip at the end.
About the wave: outside North America, a hand held up with palm forward means “stopping.” Why we do it differently in the US and Canada, I’ve no idea. It’s also the reason I signal turns by pointing in the direction I want to go with the appropriate arm straight to the side. No dainty finger pointing for me! And when Al signals a right turn with a bent left arm, I always wonder who he’s waving at!
That is kind of you to say, but you just rode the Pyrenees last year. I think the climbs on this route were pretty easy in comparison!
1 year agoI agree with Suzanne. Also, I always weigh more when I first get back partly from the flying so I wait a week to weigh myself.
1 year agoGlad you made it home okay and that your bikes got delivered. Don’t underestimate jet lag, it’s awful! But getting some exercise does help.
1 year agoLooking forward to hearing more about your travels when we are in Tucson!
1 year agoWhat a wonderful photo. Congratulations! I couldn’t have done what you did.

We also ran into the apartments/hotel problem, and also got waved in from one to the other. I am up at 3 a.m.for no reason here at the Beatriz, and thinking about that modest no eggs breakfast to come at 8.
