Rich, sometimes I still do that while riding around town. Basing a whole mini-tour on the idea would be amazing. Thank you for the suggestion.
2 years agoWhere can one buy a sign like that? Asking for a friend...
2 years agoGreg, have you ever considered a "left-right" tour? We used to do this when I was a kid in East LA. Start from in front of your house. Take the first left turn you come to. Then take the next right. Then the next left. Repeat until exhausted or in a really bad neighborhood. You obviously need some special rules for dead ends. I'll leave the rest to you. I look forward to the trip report.
2 years agoCan’t wait. Really, you should extend this into January.
2 years agoI don’t know. It looks like a piece of medieval weaponry to me. Maybe one of the European explorers brought it over to suppress the natives in case smallpox was too slow-acting.
2 years agoYou’re right, a bit more zoom would help. They look like surf scoters to me, mostly because they look like they have whitish bills. If so, they look like a pretty unusual sighting. Go back and see if you can get closer and report back.
2 years agoThere are some very interesting things near YOUR town and I am pleased to see them through your eyes from your bike seat! That Little Log House place would be really cool to visit.
Great post Greg — I will now read on…
Fred was good, but G-2 is great.
2 years agoWhat a great quote for bicycle touring!
2 years agoHumm.... One of my best friends was a world-class harmonica player and spoke 5 languages. After retiring he sort-of invented his own religion, kind of a new-age thing with Native American beliefs sprinkled in - he led tours to mystical locations and made a bit of money from the "faithful," if that's the correct term to describe his adherents. So I'll be interested in seeing what sort of religion and/or religious philosophy you invent - something associated with bicycles would be good - the "Cycle of Life" ministry perhaps? I'm ultimately seeking cyclist Valhalla, so show me the way.
2 years agoI'm also a big fan of Iowa for bicycle touring. Especially so since I discovered that Muscatine was once the pearl button capitol of the world - you just never know what secrets and unique history you might find in a town in Iowa. Thanks for doing this journal "differently," it has been fun to follow along (even though I'm actually just now catching up).
2 years agoNice to see that I'm not the only one who carries a notebook on tour. I make occasional notes as I go along in a small notebook - nothing as fancy as the journal you use. And I have to admit to a small bit of technical modernism cause I also sometimes make notes on my phone as well.
2 years agoYikes, that would be embarrassing.
2 years agoIndeed he is. Exiscyclism is nothing if not pragmatic.
